Thursday, September 25, 2008. On the north head of the Kaipara Harbour, approx 2 hour walk from Pouto Point carpark. The wooden lighthouse built in 1884 over looks the treacherous sandbar at the mouth of what used to be the busiest harbour in NZ. The lighthouse is situated on a sandstone ledge 278 feet above sea level. It was switched to automation in 1947 the same year the harbour was closed to ships. Ashby Homestead built in 1900.
